Selena is a young singer/songwriter from Camano Island, Washington. She has just released her second CD project called Painted Sky in June 2010. She had a great summer of performances including Camano Island's Art by the Bay 2010 and a very successful performance at the 2010 Stanwood-Camano Fair.
In September 2009, she was invited to play at a singer/songwriter showcase for two shows at the Whiskey City Rock Bar in Portland Oregon. Selena was also featured on Bellingham, Washington's KISM 92.9 Locals Only radio show, hosted by Pooner Clark, where she played live and was interviewed about her first CD, Love and Lyrics.
It all started in 2003 when Selena was 7 years old and was invited up onstage at the Moore Theater in Seattle by Australian singer/songwriter Kasey Chambers. She and her brother accompanied Kasey on a rocking version of Runaway Train which left the nearly full house on its feet for a standing ovation. Selena was hooked. She learned to play guitar and started performing at talent shows. In 2004, her and a schoolmate formed a duo called Heartrate and won first place in the Marysville Strawberry Festival Talent Show covering Avril Lavigne's Nobody's Home. Soon after, she started writing her own material and it became obvious that she had a talent for
songwriting. She later learned to play piano and started performing at local open mics and events. In 2008, with her father's help, she started recording some of her songs at home. To spice up the recording, she enlisted the help of some talented local musicians for the CD project, Love and Lyrics. A local venue, called Blazing Saddles, offered to host a CD release party. All the musicians who were on the CD took the stage for the first time together to play with Selena. The event went so well her band was formed.
Past performances have included: The Stanwood-Camano Fair; Art by the Bay on Camano Island; The Silvana Fair; Mirkwood Cafe; Blazing Saddles, as well as many other local open mics. In 2008 and 2009, Selena was a street busker at the Seattle Folklife Festival, which went very well, as she captivated young and old alike and sold many CDs.
Selena has a wide variety of musical influences including Sara Bareilles, Raining Jane, Sarah McLachlan, Evanescence, the Beatles, Kasey Chambers, and many others.
Review, Stanwood Camano News 2008
"In a darkened venue, the only illuminated face is that of the girl onstage, strumming her guitar and belting out self-written songs in perfect pitch. 'I’m a revolution to be born, I’m about to soar,' she sang. Audience members might have found it hard to believe the musician on stage was only 12 years old. Onstage ... [she] proved that in a world full of idol wannabes and pop-star catastrophes, nothing beats a truly talented, diligently driven musical spirit"
